In the last few days Iv read a number of articles, both online and in prominent magazines, that suggest there is a downturn in the games industry on the PC.
Various arguments are cited, along with facts and figures about why the console market is bigger and better than the PC games market. Which is why I found this post on ripten quite interesting.
It doesn’t say much about the PC games industry specifically, but it is amusing to notice that it is based around the fact that Crysis on the PC looks a whole lot better than it does on any consoles.
So much for the quality of console games then.
It also interesting to note that the perceived downturn in the PC games industry crops up in the news on a fairly regular basis, and the best looking games are still found on the PC.
I love playing crysis on my PC, and I still don’t understand why people buy consoles. When versions of GTA eventually make it to PC i can’t see what consoles have over PC’s besides maybe the Wii with its innovative controller. If your gonna buy a PC put a few more hundred dollars in and your set for gaming.
I tend to agree. A friend of mine has just spent money on an XBox 360, and while Iv not exactly said it to him, I am less than impressed with the graphics, the game play or the controller. Perversely enough, it looks better on a smaller standard TV than it does on a 20 inch HDTV, and neither look as good as my PC.
As for the Wii I think its an excellent family game machine (I have two kids and we often have tournaments in something), but aside from the group/family aspect of it, the controller is the only thing that it has going for it. Graphically we were playing games like this ages ago.
To be honest I think too many people suffer from some form of technophobia when it comes to PC’s. A console seems to be a middle ground games platform for these people and all they have to think about is the “On” button and putting in a disk.
Quite why anyone with a decent PC would want a console as well is beyond my comprehension. It seems like taking one step forward and several years worth of steps back.
